Anchor Institution Initiatives

Making homes more affordable

IU Indianapolis’ anchor housing program offered down payment and home repair loan assistance to full-time employees interested in buying a home within portions of the Near West/River West, Riverside, and Ransom neighborhoods.

Eligible employees were able to get a five-year forgivable loan, and for each year they live in the home, 20 percent of the loan balance will be eliminated and the entire loan will be forgiven after five years.

Purchasing from the community

IU Indianapolis' Office of Procurement is eager to build relationships with Indianapolis-area suppliers and to do business with them when the opportunity presents itself.

To help make it easier for small businesses and other vendors to connect with the university, the office takes part in events like the Black Business Summit and in a new Indy Chamber initiative that encourages business owners to partner with IU Indianapolis.

In 2014, IUPUI spent almost $115 million in Marion County, which was 45 percent of the university’s total purchases that year. (IUPUI transitioned to IU Indianapolis in 2014).
